Ask The Experts
This Question Is From Reader F. William H
Question:
I have a new product - I would like to license it but
at the same time I think it would do great & would establish a record by
launching it on QVC. I realize that QVC requires inventory. Is it possible
to get a 'pre-approval' - from QVC so that I can obtain the financing to
develop?? Please advise.
Answer From QVC Expert
Kim Babjak:
You will have to determine which way you want to enter the market with your product. Both ways, licensing and self promotion have their pro's and con's. That is an internal business decision you need to make, taking into consideration all that is required to do both.
I always recommend that a company do a launch with QVC, if the product fits the demographics, because they require minimal inventory, and it provides an immediate response from the public. Something you do not get going into retail, necessarily.
As an agent, I have the ability to show my buyers a potential product and get initial interest. However, inventors have a difficult time getting access to a buyer for pre-interest, if you do not know one personally. You can attend a QVC open buy to speak to buyers, however, you will need samples to show to them. QVC would require that they have samples to show an interest in a product. It is better to not rely on any retailer to develop a product. They change their minds frequently and that could spell trouble if you develop just for, and based, on them.
As for licensing, it is always good to have a product on the market selling well to get a really good licensing deal. Potential licensees like to see and know that a product can penetrate the market, with as little effort from them, and can show a good potential for growth from their already set distribution channels, and capital investment (ROI).
If you are limited in capital yourself to launch a product, then finding a good manufacturer/licensee is a good option. However, if you want to launch on QVC or retail, you will need to be able to provide them inventory, at your cost, to launch. You can not do QVC & HSN at the same time either. QVC particularly, likes to have new and unique products that HSN will not have access to. There are ways of doing both, however, it takes some offering changes.
Good Luck!
